Let's learn business idioms - part 3

1.    Cut one losses – means to stop doing something that is unproductive and won’t general results.

2.     Cut-throat – describe something that is very intense, aggressive and merciless.  E.g. In business school, the competition was cut-throat.

3.     Diamond in the rough – something or someone that has a lot of potential but requires a lot of work.  E.g.  John is a diamond in the rough.  He is smart and has great ideas, but his management and English skills are not that great.

4.     Easy come, easy go – an expression used to describe something that is gained easily and is also lost easily.  E.g. A lot of people who inherit money waste it on stupid things.  It’s easy come, easy go.

5.     From the ground up – start from nothing, start from zero.

6.     Game plan – a strategy or plan.

7.     Get the ball rolling – means to start something, e.g.  a project

8.     Get / have one’s foot in the door – means to take a lower-level position with a company with the goal of eventually get a higher position eventually.

9.     To give the thumbs up – to give approval.

To give the thumbs down - to disapprove
