Canada hit by massive mobile and internet outage on July 8

Jul 11, 2022

First of all, I would like to apologize to the students whom I didn't show up for lessons on the evening of July 8 and the morning of July 9 (Japan time). There was no internet, so I couldn't notify any students.

申し訳ございませんでした。

I don't know when mobile and internet started to be out of service, maybe 5 or 6am?

I noticed something was wrong with the internet when I logged in on Cafetalk around 7 am.  I tried resetting my modem but there was still no internet.  Then I noticed that the phone wasn't working either.

"It is the end of the world!" I thought.  I had a lesson in an hour, and a few in the evening. I really panicked :(

Well, it was almost like living in the Stone Age when you don't have a phone or internet.  A lot of shops and offices were closed early because the credit/debit card machines wouldn't work without internet.

I spent most of the day lying on the couch reading a book, and playing with our new dog.  The kids spent the whole day outside. Without internet, they couldn't play online games.

Internet finally came back really late at night, almost 20 hours later.  People have been talking about how much we rely on internet these days.

Right now, my family and friends are all talking about switching to another major internet provider.
