Okinawan traditional musical instrument - 'Sanshin' + Ukulele

Nov 13, 2017

As many of you are aware, I have been working and travelling across Japan with my girlfriend Ashley.

We are absolutely loving our time here, but one thing I have noticed is that I am missing my guitar so much!

I decided not to take it with me as it is not only heavy, but not ideal when you have to board trains and planes every 2-4 weeks!

I have been playing the guitar in the UK since I was young and played in a few bands over this time. I really miss playing live music!

The feeling of playing music with others in front of an audience is indescribable.

Whilst on a run, I found a traditional Okinawan music shop which sold instruments from all over Asia. One of these which I found particularly interesting is the 'Sanshin', which is a traditional three stringed Okinawan instrument, that produces a haunting and melodic note. It instantly conjures up images of ancient China and Japan whenever I hear the locals playing this instrument, sat outside the front of shops and their homes. It is traditionally made from the skin of a snake, although it is not the fearsome 'habu' snake which is known across this island.

After looking around the shop in awe, I decided to buy a ukulele! It looked beautiful, and was crafted out of red mahogany in Japan. What was even better was that it was on sale and was a great price! The shop owner even threw in (idiom) a carry case and a tuner for free.

It’s ideal for travelling as it is very light and small, it fits in my bag, and can be easily carried on a plane. What’s more - it is ideal for taking down to the beach or playing whilst on your own in natural surroundings.

I have never played a ukulele before, but after an hour or so last night just messing around on it, I love it!

The sound makes me so happy! :-)

Have a happy and creative day everyone!
