Here are the steps:
- Think of a topic that you want to speak about, but don't use a common topic. Everyone can speak about their families or jobs. Try to choose an uncommon topic like festivals, sports, movies, healthcare, and so on.
- Set the timer on your phone for 1 minute. During this minute, think about the topic carefully.
- Use the recording function on your phone to record yourself speaking for 2 minutes.
- Did I speak for the whole 2 minutes, or did I speak a lot less than 2 minutes?
- When I was speaking, did I focus on the topic or did I change to a different topic?
- Did I use a wide range of grammar, vocabulary, and expressions?
- Was my English correct?
- Did I start speaking quickly, or was I slow to start speaking?
This exercise is something I have practiced with my students for many years with a lot of success. Please note that this activity should be done many times (not only once or twice) before improvements will be noticeable.
If you would like to practice this exercise and receive feedback and tips about your English, please consider taking my lesson. It is called Speed Up English! (Speaking) Lesson Pack. If you take my lesson, you can choose between casual topics (beginner) or advanced ones.
Take care and have a nice day!
