Do / Would You Mind If I ?

Jan 19, 2015

When we ask permission politely,we can use would you mind if i + past or do you mind if i + present.'Would you mind if i' is more polite than 'Do you mind if i'.

DO YOU MIND IF I...

Here are some examples:

  • 'Do you minf if i excuse myself'
  • 'Do you mind if i take a nap?'
  • 'Do you mind if i ask your mom?'
  • 'Do you mind if it snows?'
  • 'Do you mind if i use your phone?'

You could also use the word 'would'.

WOULD YOU MIND IF I...

Here are some examples:

  • 'Would you mind if we went out to eat?'
  • 'Would you mind if i opened the window?'
  • 'Would you mind if i changed the channel?'
  • 'Would you mind if we sat here?'
  • 'Would you minf i turned on this light?'
How to response?

Positive responses are:

No, not at all
Ofcourse not
No, go on please

When someone asks for permission , we usually reply no .. meaning 'I don't mind' or 'I am happy with that'. If we want to say that we are not happy, we usually begin with 'I am afraid...'

Negative responses are:

Yes, i do/would
Well,actually ...a refusal reason.
I am afraid, ... a refusal reason.
