My name is Ashley, and I love the Japanese language and culture. I can also speak Japanese, but I’m not fluent yet. Regardless, I can still teach English to Japanese students who can’t speak any English at all. I am passionate about learning as much as possible about the Japanese language and culture in order to facilitate relations between the US and Japan. Furthermore, I want to live in Japan one day. Thus, I want to teach English to Japanese students in order to achieve this goal.
I have nearly two years of experience in teaching English to Japanese friends online and face-to-face. I am also taking formal Japanese classes at JASH (Japan America Society of Houston). Additionally, I am a member of the Houston Advanced Japanese Conversation Group. Thus, I have the opportunity to engage in language exchange with several Japanese friends.
Since I have my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing, and I am also currently studying Japanese and Korean, I understand the struggles of student life. Nursing school was one of the most difficult times in my life, but I never gave up. I believe that with hard work, dedication and persistence, you, too, can reach your aspirations! I always strive to be empathetic, patient and courteous with all of my students to facilitate a positive learning environment. I currently work full-time as a Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory three days per week, but I have four days off per week, so I am available during those days to teach English and music lessons.
I have approximately four years of experience teaching music to children from Kindergarten through 12th grade at the Awty International School in Houston. Most of my students were from foreign countries, so I primarily taught international students. During the time that I taught international students, I discovered that teaching music to international students coincidentally exposed me to numerous foreign languages and cultures. This sparked my passion for teaching and learning about international languages and cultures.
My English teaching style is unique because I incorporate music into my lessons. Music is holistically beneficial, so it makes lessons more fun, engaging and memorable! I play several instruments (alto saxophone, clarinet, guitar, piano, ukulele, violin, flute) and I sing. I believe one of the best ways to learn is through having fun, so sometimes I like to incorporate games into my lessons as well. Happy cerebral stimulation is the key to an extraordinary learning experience! I structure my lessons in a fashion that is based on the particular students’ level and needs. I would recommend an introduction lesson in order to assess these factors and customize your learning plan. I am open to beginners through advanced learners of English. Please check out my English and/or music lessons if you wish to advance your English skill in an entertaining, unique fashion that goes beyond rote textbook memorization.
