Driving (Golf) Range...Cleaner? My First Part Time Job

Weekly Topic: A memory of my first part-time job

Jack Detroit

Golf is a very popular hobby in Japan. And it is a big industry in the US. There are a lot of golf courses, country clubs, and driving ranges. And every day thousands of golfers practice at the driving range, hitting millions of old golf balls out into the grass or a giant green net.

Someone has to pick up those balls and bring them back! For high school students who need a first job, the driving range is a terrible, dangerous, low paying place to start. And this was my first part-time job.

It has been many years since I worked for the driving range, and I have played golf in many countries. But I will always have sympathy for the young boys and girls who have to go out and collect my practice balls.
