MY STORY:

Hey there!

I’m Jonathan (Yes, that’s my official name). I grew up in a suburban town just outside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Right now, I’ve made my home in a lovely countryside sitting at the border of Kyoto, Osaka and Nara. That means I get to enjoy the best of three worlds.

<汉语>
你好!我是 Jonathan。在马来西亚的吉隆波出生长大。自5年前称京都的京田边市为我的家。从这里,京都市,大阪市和奈良市十分靠近。

<日本語>
こんにちは!
ジョナタン でございます。マレーシアのクアラルンプール出身です。現在、京都府京田辺市に住んでいます。ここから、京都市と大阪市と奈良市めっちゃ近いし、いろいろ楽しむことができます。

I studied and speak English, Mandarin Chinese and Malay from a very early age … I also know some other Chinese dialects, Tamil (a language from South India) and am now self-studying Japanese.

<日本語>
英語が母語ですが、他にネイティブレベルの中国語、マレーシア語、インドネシア語で読み、書き、会話が出来ます。また、日本語で読み書きが出来、日常会話レベルの日本語を話します。平成31年に実用日本語検定試験J.TESTを受け、C級(中級レベル)(JLPT N2~N1相当)を取得しました。

You will notice I use a mix of British and American English. That's because we are taught British English at school but I often watch American TV dramas, movies, and cartoons and many of my friends are from America. My students often commented that it is easy to follow my speech because I do not have an accent.

Since I’m able to converse in Japanese (as well as Mandarin Chinese), we could probably use this as an added advantage. If you are struggling with words, I might be able to help you find the right words. Of course, in order to improve more quickly, I will set a limit on when and how many times you can use Japanese during the lesson.

I became a teacher not just to teach but share what I know, i.e. language, in a way that helps others gain a new advantage. E.g. language.

TEACHING BACKGROUND

For nearly five years in Japan, I’ve taught English as a professional teacher and as a volunteer to people of different age groups at different locations:

  1. Elementary school students (7~12 years old) at private after-school centres

  2. Junior high and high school students (13~18 years old) at a private English cram school

  3. Young adults and adults (19 years old and above)

  4. I’ve also taught Mandarin Chinese and Malay to some of my friends.

In 2018, I decided to take up the TESOL certification self-study course online in order to sharpen my skills in teaching English particularly to speakers of other languages.

TEACHING STYLE

My lessons are focused on the practical use of English, both in everyday life and in business settings. I will also be sharing useful tips and tricks to help you even when you're on your own. If you have a specific request, be sure to let me know and I will structure the lesson accordingly.

Among other things, you will gain these things from my lessons …

  1. Converse more naturally

  2. Communicate your thoughts more effectively

  3. Communicate more confidently

  4. Improve listening, reading and language studying skills, et cetera…

I love taking photographs, going for a drive spontaneously and really enjoy travelling. Who knows, we may share the same interests and use it as a conversation piece to practice your speaking skills.

TEACHING MATERIALS:

(Based on your needs and requests)

  • Plenty of visual aids including photos, images, illustrations

  • PDF, DOC practice sheets/worksheets/printables

  • Videos/podcasts

  • News articles and journals

  • Powerpoint slides

  • Textbooks

  • I’m also open to any suggestions and requests.

I would suggest booking a 30-min trial lesson … You will get to understand my teaching style and method, get a feel of my lessons, or hear my recommendations based on your learning goals, current level, desired pace and desired learning curve.

  • What is your main goal of learning English?

  • Is it to improve your conversational skills? Your reading skills?  Or your speaking skills?

  • Are you studying to pass an exam like EIKEN?

  • Are you planning to study abroad, work abroad or just travel to another country?

If you’re not sure which lesson you should pick, request a free 30-minute consultation to discuss your language learning goals and I’ll tailor my lessons to fit your goals. Or, you could try one of my lesson package to test the waters.

Either way, you’re here and all it takes is clicking that button to book your first lesson to be on your way to becoming a fluent and effective English speaker.

If you are just starting off, don’t worry, I’ve been there. I came to Japan without knowing the language. After 5 years, speaking Japanese has been and still is a challenge for me. In other words, I can relate to how you feel. Nevertheless, the most crucial step is putting your feet in the water, and get started.

See you soon!
