Decades ago, I discovered teaching was my calling; my passion. I learned this when I discovered how important communication was. I knew I had to get involved. I knew I had to share.
Most of my adult career has been spent in communications and teaching, with some strong adminisistrative skills added in, in offices in Corporate Canada. Further, a few years ago, I invested in virtual assistance training, graduated, and am a qualified virtual assistant.
Presenting and Teaching Background
Between jobs, I took some extra training. I began to learn about computers and software long before those things were 'popular.' I took communications studies at university, and I took TV-Radio broadcasting training. Everything I did - technology, communications, broadcasting, and later, virtual assistance - was designed to live the life and skills I wanted to teach.
My presentation/teaching skills began by presenting one-day workshops on technology to people across Canada. That led to my first part-time teaching opportunity at the college level. (That was 30 years ago!) While teaching part-time, I gained valuable administrative and communications skills in Corporate Canada. Eventually, I was able to pursue my dream: teaching day-time college students this country's two largest colleges.
I teach business writing, business communication, technology courses, and virtual assistance.
How I Teach
It's very important to me that I understand my student's current level of understanding. To do that, our first 'lesson' (Cafetalk allows me to set up trials, and I'm happy to do that) involves getting to know each other. For example, let's say you found about about the work-at-home life of a virtual assistant. When we begin our discussion I'll want to know what you know about this industry, and to make an honest assessment with you about whether it's viable and effective for you to pursue the field. Next, I'll want to understand how you learn best. Some students learn by listening or watching. Others by reading, and still others by hands-on and doing. Any/all ways of learning are good for me; it's what's good for you that matters.
When we get started, I'll be as clear as possible for you. I'm an expert in my chosen fields, but that doesn't mean I can't be corrected or asked to clarify something. Questions are always welcome.
All of my lessons will be structured, will include a table of contents or set of outcomes, and will include additional materials. I'll make a number of resources available to you that relate to your goals. If we have several lessons together, there will be follow-up homework.
Most of my students will be adult learners, and I am specifically skilled to help you if you need to improve your technical knowledge in Microsoft Office, or your (North American-based) knowlege in business communications, business writing, or virtual assistance.
I hope a part of your dream includes learning about one of my specialities from me!
