Hello! I'm happy to meet you. My name is Katherine Sholder, and I have more than 20 years experience as an English as a Foreign Language teacher. I am a native English speaker from the USA, and I now live permanently in Lisbon, Portugal. I have a Master’s degree in Education and a teaching certificate from the University of Michigan, and I specialize in conversation and public speaking skills. With a strong background in education, I teach all ages and levels of English language learners, from beginners to advanced learners -- in person and online. I teach group and individual classes in many different settings, from public and private schools to private institutions and universities. In addition to helping students prepare for standardized tests such as TOEFL and TOEIC, I also offer professional editing and proofreading services.
My main goal is to help students feel confident using English, whether it’s for travel, work, or social situations. I love teaching English because it allows me to learn about my student’s cultures and share mine. Offering individual and group lessons for all levels has given me the privilege of working with children, teens, and adults from all over the world. Traveling abroad, living in different countries, and learning several languages have helped me understand the difficulties of learning a new language. Since I believe that a relaxed atmosphere reduces stress and helps students learn, my lessons are always student centered and fun! I don’t use just one method of teaching, but instead base my lessons on each individual’s different goals and learning styles.
I have taught English to thousands of Japanese students of all ages, and I look forward to starting our English language journey together soon!
