Hello, my name is Riley Alexander Watts, I am 31 years old and come from Australia.
When I was studying I found that the traditional classroom environment was not always beneficial to my education, sometimes it made the learning process more difficult, as such I have based my teaching style on those teachers who could present the information to me in a way that it truly stuck. I want my students to feel comfortable, relaxed and happy in my classes, I believe when students are in this headspace it is much easier for them to retain information and practically intergrate learnt skills. I believe there are too many students who are very good at English tests but cannot comfortably have a conversation in English, therefore my focus in teaching English is teaching the practical skill of communication in a foreign language.
My lessons are usually catered to the students needs, I believe that every student is unique in there strengths, weaknesses and required focus, therefore I try and teach lessons that will benefit the student, over my many years of experience I have collected thousands of lessons plans and activities focused on different aspects of English and needs of students, I have not encountered a problem in learning English I was not prepared to deal with in many years, usually within the first 2 minutes of talking to a new student I will have identified some lessons or activities that would be useful for them.
Experience:
I have been teaching ESL English for about 9 years, most of my experience was in China but I have spent the last year living and teaching in Vietnam. Over these years I have taught almost all ages, all levels and for many different purposes, I have taught probably thousands of students for speaking exams (i.e. IELTS, TOEFL etc.) but I also taught professionals for specific purposes, I taught English to a worker from the department of foreign affairs of China who wanted to learn English around this focus, I also taught a brain surgeon who wanted a focus on that, many real estate agents, bank workers and of course all sorts of workers from the hospitality industry.
ESL teaching is a huge passion in my life, it is a major source of joy in my life to see my students improve their communication skills in English and achieve their goals. A recent success story was a student who achieved an 8 in IELTS on her first attempt and is now studying in Cambridge University, I’ve seen my students go to some of the top universities in the world and the joy I feel when I see this is why I love ESL teaching so much.
About me:
I currently live in Vietnam so I like to go swimming at the beautiful beaches in the coastal city of Da Nang, swimming is a common hobby in my native country of Australia and seeing the beaches here remind me of the beautiful beaches I used to visit back at home. I love music, both listening to it and making it, I like to play guitar and record music with my MIDI controller. I also enjoy computer games, especially small, independent games such as “untitled goose game” or “undertale”, I really appreciate unique techniques of storytelling and how this medium is evolving.
