Hello everyone! My name is Deborah. I am a native English speaker from the United Kingdom, but am currently living and working in Barcelona, Spain. Thank you for taking the time to read my profile!
A little bit about me...
I am a CELTA qualified English teacher, and have been teaching for 4 years in China, Sri Lanka, South America and Spain. I have taught all ages and abilities of students, from 4-year olds to 80-year olds - beginners to very advanced.
Before training to be an English teacher I worked in the UK for 24 years in various management jobs in local government and the private IT industry. My extensive professional experience and my BA (Hons) Business Management (Economics) degree have helped me enormously when delivering my Business English classes to a variety of senior business professionals in Spain.
My passion is for travel, meeting new people and learning about new cultures. I have visited 50+ countries for holidays (including Japan!) and volunteer experiences and am (slowly!) learning Spanish. I therefore appreciate the challenges that everyone faces when learning a new language.
What will I be teaching?
· Business English: My specialism is teaching Business English, as I have a lot to offer students due to my previous management experience. I can help with interview preparation, presentations, writing/reading reports or business-related documents, email/telephone communications or the essential conversational English that you need when socialising with colleagues and business associates. My Business English students in Spain enjoy our lessons and my relaxed yet professional approach to lessons has helped them all improve their English immensely. They now feel much more confident when using English in their work, and it has also helped them when travelling or watching films/reading books.
· General / Conversational English: You may want to improve your English for travel or personal development purposes. I have experience of this in one-to-one and group settings. In Colombia, I ran a class for 20+ adult students. Many had little or no English to start with, but after a 10-week course, they were all able to have conversations with each other. Another student in Spain – at his first lesson he spoke very little English, was very nervous and afraid to make mistakes. A few weeks on and he can easily talk for our 1.5 hours lesson about a wide range of subjects!! By building my students’ confidence, and steadily increasing vocabulary and grammar skills, their English level improves significantly.
· English examination preparation: I also have experience of preparing students for Cambridge or IELTS examinations. Whether it is to focus on the speaking element of the examination or any other component, I can help you.
· Project Management: My previous professional experience as a PRINCE2 qualified Project Manager for many years enables me to also teach Project Management skills. Regardless of the size of the project, the skills required are the same. So, I can help you improve your project management skills and your English at the same time.
What are my lessons like?
My lessons are enjoyable and interesting as I create an environment that is comfortable for my students to learn. I am a very patient and passionate teacher, and I take my job very seriously to ensure that my students achieve their English learning goals.
I can offer ‘ready-made’ lessons for speaking, pronunciation, grammar, etc, etc, or can customise lessons to suit your specific needs. From my experience, I know that if the lesson is relevant and interesting for you as an individual, you will learn a lot more and achieve your goals.
