My name is Joseph Martin. I taught English to Japanese, Korean and Chinese students who visited the Wesley Foundation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). I was born and raised in east central, Illinois which is a midwestern state of the United States of America. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). UIUC is regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in the United States and has received world acclaim as a premier research institution so much so that it is referred to as a 'Public Ivy'.
Many of my friends at university were from Korea, Japan and China and I spent much time as a volunteer English tutor on campus at UIUC.
At the Wesley Foundation, students attended the International Coffee House to receive English lessons from native English speakers. I helped Japanese students practice conversational English, and advised them on English grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
For more than for eleven years, I have worked for Pearson which is a leader in the education industry. I consider myself privileged to have the opportunity to contribute my knowledge and skills to help students with their education.
In 2016, I enrolled in a 120-hour online Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) course with International TEFL and TESOL Training (ITTT). I successfully completed the course and earned my TESOL certification.
Moreover, immediately after earning my TESOL certification, I enrolled in another teaching course at ITTT which I successfully completed. Thus, in addition to my TESOL, I have earned a Certificate of Teaching English to Young Learners (CTEYL).
My TESOL certification and CTEYL enhance my qualifications; I look forward to using my training to further help non-native English speakers gain confidence and proficiency in the English language.
In my spare time, I do a lot of bodyweight and heavyweight strength training, reading non-fiction and fiction, listening to classical music (e.g. Ralph Vaughan Williams) and alternative rock (Silversun Pickups), and spending time outdoors. As a homeowner, I also enjoy caring for animals and plants that live in my yard. :)
At UIUC I was a member of a Japanese Animation Club and I've been watching Japanese anime ever since.

Information About My Classes
When you enroll in my Cafetalk classes, you will be required to actively participate in each lesson. Students do not need to bring any materials to class because I will provide the materials to you. My lessons are designed for students to use the following areas of communication:
New students will also take a very short assessment quiz so that I can learn more about your English level. My classes are designed for pre-intermediate to advanced level English as a Foreign Language students.
I reside in central Iowa which is in the same time zone as Chicago, Illinois. Officially I am listed as available from 3 PM - 5 PM on Tuesday afternoons Chicago time. However, you can more likely reach me through email; we can then negotiate times that best work for tutoring sessions.
I'm available via Skype.
