Hello everyone, This is Tony and this is the first entry for my column. I hope it is not too borin...
Hello there!!!

This is Tony. I´m here to help you to master the English language. I love everything from riddles, tales, kids' games to tongue twisters to help you improve your pronunciation. These are fun tools to practice and get confidence in any language.

I am living in New York City. It is one of the biggest cities in the world, with its hundreds of museums and cultural activities, you can never get bored. I´m looking forward to continue my studies as a posdoctoral researcher and move abroad.

I´ve been teaching English for the last thirteen years to students ranging from kids to graduate students. Particularly, my experience with college students (I used to teach next to the largest College in Mexico) has given me lots of experience in topics relevant to discussions for science and technology, as well as politics and human nature. So why not come for a little chat to practice your speaking skills?

Students in Mexico

Also, here in New York, I have found many places to teach as a volunteer! I have had the chance to work with people from all latin America (Colombian, Peruvian, Ecuadorian, Argentinian, etcetera) who have a diverse set of backgrounds. This has made me reelaborate much of my work as an instructor to adapt it to my students. New York is really multicultural!

I usually ask my students what aspect of English they have found to be the most difficult to learn. Answers range from vocabulary to listening and grammar, but most students find speaking complicated because that is the ability which requires getting everything they have learned together. So I have developed strategies for helping them to overcome this difficulty.

Besides my English teaching experience, I have a BS in Psychology and a PhD in Neuroscience. I worked in a laboratory doing research on memory and attention, related to the effects genetics can have on them. Because English is the language we use in the scientific articles we publish and in conferences, I can be of great help if you need assistance on academic writing or presentations in front of a specialized audience. Maybe you need some feedback before the actual presentation. Be sure that I will always have questions to help you anticipate the real ones!

I encourage you to insert English into your everyday life, just like your mother tongue, and this is achieved by having a meaningful learning! Don't be shy about your mistakes and remember: Your language teacher is like your second mother! He or she will tell you what is correct or incorrect to say. Making mistakes (and having a tacher to help you identify them) is the only way you can improve your language learning.
