Perhaps they are surprised to see a gaikokujin in their territory!?
No....this is was taken in central Nara on the weekend where there are many tourists!

Perhaps they were plotting to steal my food or drink!
I was on a long running trip to the mountains and around Kasuga etc. I had a bottle of water with me and also a nut and seed mix. 

Did they want this food and drink?
No. It would be far too boring for them compared to the food that many tourists carry!

Haha.

Perhaps my imagination is getting carried away with itself!

Either way - living in Nara I have really come to love and respect these magnificient creatures.

One of my favourite days in recent time was when I took my ukulele and went to play it down by the river. There was no one else around except for 2 small deer, and what I assume was their mother or father. They sat down so peacefully near me, listening to me (attempting) to play music! I hope it wasn't too annoying for them. Haha.

I am in Hokkaido right now, and will be here for 8 days. I have a very busy time planned here and will be working lots, but I am on a short break now. The weather is far nicer than expected, and I actually got very hot on my run this morning, despite it being very early!
