Silent letters in English words!

Feb 14, 2018 | 2 Comments

Dear Cafetalk Community,

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to remind you that there are many silent letters in English words. The words with the silent "l" are mentioned above. Do you know which ones have silent letters so you don't mispronounce the words?

[Below are some other words with silent letters:]

sword --> the "w" is silent

psychology --> the "p" is silent

receipt --> the "p" is silent

muscle --> the "c" is silent

honest --> the "h" is silent

asthma --> the "th" is silent

knee --> the "k" is silent

subtle --> the "b" is silent

gnaw --> the "g" is silent

solemn --> the "n" is silent

knead --> the "k" is silent

mortgage --> the "t" is silent

If you'd like to see more information about the words above, please visit the weblink with the article: http://mentalfloss.com/article/58773/15-words-plagued-unusual-silent-letters

Don't pronounce the silent letters because if you include the silent letter in your word(s), you will be mispronouncing them. These words are pronounced differently than the written form. It's good to know them so you are aware that they exist and you can be sure to pronounce the words correctly.

I just thought I'd share some information on your journey to master the English language. If you'd like to learn more about silent letters in words or you'd like to discuss anything else, please let me know. I hope the above information helps you!

Have a wonderful day!

Warmest regards,

Lady Ayame
