Okinawan local food, drink and LONGEVITY secrets - Part 2!

Nov 16, 2017 | 2 Comments

For all those who enjoyed my previous column on local Okinawan food and drink, here is the second part!

Please feel free to leave comments below, and if you have any questions - feel free to ask me ANYTHING! :-)

4. Shikuwasa - This is a delicious citrus fruit, which is used in a similar fashion to lemons and limes in the West. It is said to have over 4 times the amount of vitamin C as a typical orange fruit, and many other beneficial nutrients such as vitamin B1 which is said to reduce fatigue. Most interestingly Shikuwasa contains 'nobiletin' which is believed to be a supressor of cancerous tumours and is therefore closely linked with Okinawan longevity.

5. Mozuku Seaweed - This edible seaweed is unique to Okinawa as it is far thicker than the mozuku which is harvested in other parts of Japan. It is rather slimy in texture, but contains many beneficial vitamins and minerals and a lot of fibre! As this is something which many of us are deficient in, perhaps we should take note of the Okinawan peoples vitality, and start introducing more mozuku in to our diets!

6. Jimami Tofu - This is a tofu which is well known all over Okinawa, and is unique in that is made from peanuts! I haven't had the chance to eat this as a proper dish yet apart from a sample in a traditional Okinawan food shop, but this is definitely on my list as it was delicious! :-)

I hope you are enjoying reading these columns! There is certainly FOOD for thought (idiom) for all of us to learn from here, and having stayed on this wonderful paradise island for over two weeks now - I can state with confidence that the Okinawan people are a picture of great health and vitality.

Have a happy and healthy day everyone!
