Sea turtles, karma, and good fortune!

Nov 15, 2017

I have been loving life here in Okinawa and am going to be very sad to leave. I think that this is possibly my favourite place in the world!

Excellent healthy food, great communities for yoga/health/fitness and more, some of the best scuba diving in the world and surfing, hiking and paddle boarding - the list goes on!

Ashley and I decided to go on a short dive yesterday, as we hadn’t dived together in years! The weather was very wet and the sea was even a bit cold, but that didn’t stop us having a great time.

We dived in the awesome 'Kerama Islands', which are known for sighting sea turtles if you are very lucky!

I was told that in Japanese culture it is considered good karma if you see one, and out of the 8 dives I have done here - I haven’t seen them at all!

Just as we were finishing out dive the captain of the boat shouted out ‘kame!’ (かめ) meaning ‘turtle!’

We were pleased to finally catch sight of a sea turtle in its natural habitat, just going about its day. It is estimated they live to 80 years old or more, and this healthy lifestyle is reflected through their actions! They move very slowly and mindfully, content with their surroundings, and seemingly unaffected by anything going on around them.

This was the highlight of my diving so far, and another experience that I will not forget!

Have a careful and mindful day everyone.
