Coming of Age Ceremony

Kebii

Today is a national holiday in Japan known as the "Coming of Age Day (Seijin no Hi)".  It is held annually on the second Monday of January. This holiday is held to congratulate all the young people who have reached the age of 20 over the past year and to help them realize that they have become adults.

On this day, the young adults attend festivities such as Coming of Age Ceremonies (Seijin-shiki) which are held at local and prefectural offices. The ceremonies are generally held in the morning at local city offices throughout Japan. Government officials give speeches and sometimes small presents are handed out to the newly recognized adults.

Many women celebrate this day by wearing furisode, a style of kimono with long sleeves that hang down, and zori sandals (as seen in the photo). Since it's difficult to set up their hair srtyles and wear the kimono by themselves, many choose to visit a beauty salon to dress and set their hair. The beauty salons open as early as 6 am on this day!

Men sometimes wear the traditional dress known as the hakama, but nowadays many choose to wear suits as they are easier to dress.

After the ceremony, many would go out with their families or friends for some drinks.

Congratulations to those who have turned 20 or are turning 20 this year!
