Burnout When Learning a New Language

Ishan Mainali

Have you ever felt that you do not have the motivation to move forward when learning a new language? Do not worry, you are not alone!

Often times, starting to learn a new language is exciting. You learn the alphabets, then the grammar with vocabulary. But once you understand the basics of the language, the motivation can go away quickly.

Once you start doing more advanced grammar with more advanced vocabulary, you might feel like you are not learning a lot. It might be because when learning the basics, everything feels new. But since you already have a good understanding of the basics, learning the advanced can feel suffocating.

How can you motivate yourself then?

1. Take breaks - take a break from learning the language. A clear mind might help you reflect on what you have been learning, whether they fit with your goals, and whether you still want to learn more of not.

2. Endulge in activities that you like - if you do not want to take a break and want to continue learning, learn the advanced elements by using methods that you like. You might like reading more than writing, or the opposite. Do whatever works for you! If you want to listen to a story, learn the language that way. If you feel like writing is boring, don't do it!

Hope this article is helpful to you. Happy learning (or taking a break!) :) Feel free to book a lesson with me if you are learning English, Hindi, or Nepali!
