Harry Potter is loved all over the world, and for a good reason. The book series is so creative and the storyline is great. But best of all they are really easy to read.

Here is a sample from the second book ‘The Chamber of Secrets’

“Raindrops the size of bullets thundered on the castle windows for days on end; the lake rose, the flower beds turned into muddy streams, and Hagrid's pumpkins swelled to the size of garden sheds.”

The language is very descriptive and includes magical vocabulary such as pumpkin and castles.

Thundered and swelled are examples of imagery. They help us to create a picture in our heads while we are reading.

In this quote there is also garden vocabulary such as lake, flower beds and garden sheds.

However, the rest of the vocabulary is simple and can be easily understood by intermediate to advanced learners.

It’s a good idea to split new vocabulary into different sections such as the ones above, garden, magical and descriptive verbs. This will help when you need to look up a word again.

I would recommend picking up a Harry Potter book, especially if you already know the story. It is not as difficult to read as you’d expect. Also, a lot of the vocabulary is repeated so you get used to it quickly.
