5 Tips To Keep Your Motivation When Learning English

Dec 4, 2019

Anyone who has ever tried to learn something new faced the challenge of keeping his motivation. Why is it so hard to stay motivated? Many experts say, simply because learning comes with feelings of failure or defeat and that causes distress for people. Check out my tips on keeping your motivation even when you face some hardships!

1. Break it down!

While it's great to have long term goals, it might be difficult to stay motivated if your goal is years away. Try to break down this long process of learning into smaller goals, like learning just a few words a day, or translating a shorter text every week. Don't set goals that are too difficult to achieve, instead focus on achievable, smaller challenges. This way you can get a feeling of success more often and you will feel that you are more than capable of achieving your goals!

2. Reward yourself!

Every time when you reach a checkpoint, treat yourself to something that you like. It can be a nice cup of coffee, something sweet or even a relaxing bath. Think about it like this. If you decided to train a person, but you never praised or rewarded him, would he be motivated to continue his studies?! Of course not! Fear is more like a short-term source of motivation. So treat yourself kindly, respectfully and don't forget that you are also a human being, who needs encouragement every now and then!

3. Don't compare yourself to others, but to the person you were yesterday!

We tend to compare ourselves to native speakers when learning a language. Simply, don't! You are the only one that you should be comparing yourself to. Think about all the things that you now today and you didn't know yesterday! Maybe nothing really can make you a native speaker, but you can still be the best version of yourself. Believe me, that is more than enough.

4. Find new challenges!

My personal advice is: when something gets so boring that you can't even stand the thought of it, change! If you work only with one method of studying, you can easily be frustrated by it. In that case, it might be time to change your approach. Try some alternative methods or think outside the box. There are so many ways to improve your skills. Be creative!

5. Find some support!

Even if we are super motivated, every one of us feels burnt out sometimes. This is why it's good if you are not completely alone in the process. Share your experience with others and help each other to stay motivated. Why don't you speak in English with your friends who are also learning or find some new conversation groups?! People who share common goals can form strong friendships and they can lift each other up when they fall.

Have you ever had any problems with losing your motivation? How did you overcome it?
Tell us about YOUR experience! It might help others as well! Let's start a conversation and become a support team for one-another!
I'm all ears!
