Ochoy, the cat with extra toes

Weekly Topic: Do you have any pets? Tell us about them with pictures!

My wife and I chose her from a kindle of 7 kittens, though I think she chose us as much as we chose her. She has an extra toe on each of her paws. A cat with extra toes is called Polydactyl, although sometimes a polydactyl cat is referred to as a Hemmingway cat or a mitten cat.  Most cats have a total of 18 toes, with 4 toes on each back paw, and 5 toes on each front paw. A polydactyl cat can have as many as 8 toes on each paw.

Ochoy chose her own name! When my wife and I first brought her home, we decided to wait until we got to know her better before giving her a name. We noticed that she was always very interested in what we were doing on the computer and she would often want to put her paws on the keyboard while we were typing. We decided to see what would happen if we let her type. I said to her, "What do you want your name to be?", "Type your name!". She looked up at us with her very curious eyes, put her little paws on the keyboard and typed, "o c h o y". She probably didn't know exactly what she was doing, but now her name is Ochoy.

Cats are often known for being very independent, and dogs are known for being "man's best friend". But Ochoy likes to follow us around like a little puppy, and she always wants to be part of anything we are doing. Sometimes that can be a problem. She is so quick and curious that we need to pay extra attention at times to make sure she is not getting into things she is not supposed to.

 Like the refrigerator!

Ochoy does not like it when you sleep too long, and she will climb up on your chest, nibble on your nose, and meow until you wake up. It is better than having an alarm clock, but it is just as annoying as one if you have not had much sleep.

She sleeps whenever and wherever she wants though. Her favorite spots are on the satellite box and on my wife's shoulder.

She also likes to cuddle up with remote controls.

When she isn't following us around or cuddling with the remote, she likes to look out the window.

When she is not looking out the window, she is often climbing the window blinds.

Ochoy is a very important member of our family. We are so happy to have her in our lives.
