RIP Nan.....

RIP (Rest In Peace)

Today is my Nan’s funeral who passed away recently.

I have so many happy memories with her and my Grandad, and I’m thankful I used to take the time to see them often.

Around 10 years ago they moved away to live in Cornwall near other family, but I am glad that I regularly called them to speak of my future plans and adventures.

Even though she hadn’t visited many countries, she was always so supportive of my decision to move to Japan, even when others around me were not. She asked so many questions and was genuinely intrigued about what this mysterious, far off land was like, and I had so much fun chatting with her and Grandad, sometimes for hours about all of the weird and wonderful things that exist in this part of the world.

As you can see from the photos, my love of food (both cooking it and eating it!)came from her, and perhaps it’s their teaching me how to be independent from a young age that has led to my snobbiness when friends don’t bother to prepare food for themselves and instead order takeaways every night,as they ‘don’t know how to cook’.I remember back in primary school when we were learning about the war,the teachers mentioned ‘maybe someone’s Grandparents would like to come in and talk about what things were really like back then’ - as being so young and naive, we didn’t believe what the teachers were saying.I instantly signed up both of my grandparents, proud to show them off to the class without even taking the time to ask them first!??

Of course -they jumped at the opportunity when I mentioned it to them, and they spoke to the whole class, showing photos and items from the time.

I even remember during part of my ‘rebellious’ phase as a youth, I was never embarrassed of them as many people are of their grandparents, and if I was in the area with friends I would drop in without thinking to let them know first! When I look back, this seems so rude and ignorant of me, but of course, they were delighted to see me and meet my scallywag friends, dressed in all manner of stupid clothes and acting like idiots -but they never judged and always provided us with tea, sandwiches and smiles.

Thank you both for everything.
