The picture above shows a traditional Moroccan Riad, this is like a guesthouse and where most tourists choose to stay. Some riads have a spa attached so you can relax in the Moroccan style spa, have a massage or treatment then return to your room!
The first city I visited was Essaouira, which is a lovely small coastal town. It is popular with kite-surfers and surfers and is famous for its blue and white architecture. I love surfing so I spent one full day on the water! The streets are very narrow so cars cannot access the center of the city!
I also visited Marakkech, which is famous for shopping and being very hectic! It is the perfect place to buy souvienirs such as keyrings, bags, jewellery, cushions and rugs. Everything is so colourful! All the colours actually reminded me a little of Mexico! I bought a lovely painting and a bag made from colourful metal tiles, which was made by women from a tribe in the nearby mountains. The most important thing in Morocco is to negotiate the prices before you buy anything, in some cases you can get the item for 60% less!
The number one rated thing to do in Marrakech is to visit the Yves Saint Laurent garden, it's a beautiful garden with many interesting plants. However, because it is so popular, it is packed full of tourists! I would recommend to visit early in the morning or when the garden is about to close to avoid all the tourists!
Morocco is now one of my favourite countries, I would love to go back again some day! People were very friendly and it felt very safe compared to other countries in the region.
