My appearance on the American TV Show

2018年10月27日

Dear Cafetalk community,

I thought I'd share another accomplishment from my actress days. For those who don't know, I have been a TV and film actress in Hollywood for over 20 years. This is a "pilot" show called "Chameleon" created for the FOX Network. In Hollywood, there is a season every year called the "Pilot Season" which is a very important time for professional actors in Hollywood.

After countless writers go in to pitch their ideas every year to the TV producers, each network develops and commissions about 40 to 50 pilot scripts per year. Out of these 40 to 50 scripts, they make anywhere from 10 to 20 pilots into actual 30-minute or 1-hour shows called "pilots." So, if you're a professional actor, you want to be cast as a regular character in one of these test shows called "pilots."

Unless you mess up during the shooting of the pilot, the actor will automatically get cast as one of the regular characters in the weekly serial. If you have seen the film "Pulp Fiction," Uma Thurman's character humorously talks about her 15-minutes of fame when she was cast in a "TV pilot" called "Fox Force Five." Her character was an expert at knives. If you didn't understand the reference before, you do now!

So, now you know what a pilot is. Can you see how it's almost completely by "chance" to actually get cast in one of these "pilots," and that's why it's so hard to get cast as a regular part in any show. However, I strongly believe that "chance" or "luck" is when opportunity meets preparation.

Unfortunately, my pilot called "Chameleon" was not picked up for one of the main prime-time slots on FOX TV that year. My life would have been different if the pilot was picked up starring Ed Begley, Jr. My character's name was Ting. Being an actress was extremely difficult trying to survive the ruthless, cutthroat, and competitive entertainment industry.

Well, "no use crying over spilled milk." (American Idiom) I did my best back during my competitive acting days, and I will continue to do my best as an English tutor on Cafetalk! I accumulated over 50 TV credits on IMDb so that's something I could be proud of accomplishing. I just wanted to share another fond memory with the Cafetalk community!
