Marijuana will be legal in Canada tomorrow (Oct 17)

Oct 16, 2018

I am concerned about the legalisation of marijuana in Canada.  Starting October 17, anyone over the age of 19 can purchase marijuana from a Government website.  Later in the year, people can buy it from approved retail stores.  Each family is allowed to grow their own marijuana plants, up to 4 plants per residence.  That means people who were thinking about smoking marijuana and who previously didn't have access to it can now purchase it.  It also means there may be more impaired driving.  And here in Toronto, we already have a quite a bit of impaired driving.

The Government said legalizing marijuana is to crackdown the black market, and police has gone through training to catch impaired drivers.  When a driver is suspected of being impaired, he will be pulled over by police and the police will do a sobriety test at the scene.  If the driver fails the test, he will have to do a blood test.  The blood test has to be taken within 2 hours after he is being pulled over.

However, drugs such as marijuana, unlike alcohol, have a high dissipation rate.  If the driver does the blood test after an hour or more, the level of drugs in his blood will be pretty low.  The charges on the driver depends on the level on drugs in his blood.

This is surely bad news - for me only.

I started writing this article by saying "A lot of people are concerned...".  But after reading some online forums and blogs, it seems everyone is happy about the "Government moving in the right direction", and I seem to be the only person in Canada who is being so paranoid.

The people who are so supportive of the new legislation give the following reasons :

1. Young people, even high school students, buy marijuana anyways.  If marijuana is legalized, then the quality can be guaranteed as pure.  If you buy from illegal source, the drugs you are buying may contain unknown harmful substance.

2. It is better that the Government makes the money instead of drug dealers.

3. One person on the website said his neighbour quit smoking after smoking marijuana.  Well, like that's a healthy substitute. (sigh)
